The Great Famine - World Around Us
As we are learning about the Victorians this term, we decided to have a look at what life was like in Ireland during this era. Sadly, there was a famine during this time. The Great Famine in 1845-1850 resulted in 1 million deaths and 1 and a half million people emigrating from Ireland. It was caused by a blight. We considered the long term effects of this blight through an experiment. We are testing potatoes to determine if a potato will rot quicker or grow quicker. There were lots of variations in this experiment, such as using white potatoes and sweet potatoes, using water, no water and salt water and placing the potatoes in light or dark places. We will check these potatoes each day.
